SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

JOB DESCRIPTION  

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE:      

 

Provide special education students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the most appropriate environment designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth; develop/modify curricula and prepare lessons and teacher instructional materials according to ability levels; work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

Minimum Experience

    At least one (1) year of student teaching or approved internship

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

Instructional Strategies:

 

  1. Collaborate with parents and staff in the development of IEPs.
  1. Develop and implement social and academic programs according to IEPs.
  1. Prepare for classes assigned and show evidence of preparation.

 

Student Growth and Development:

 

  1. Consistently assess student progress through formal/informal testing.
  1. Consistently assess and modify classroom environment to maximize student success.
  1. Present positive role model for students that supports the mission of the school district.
  1. Provide or seek sources to aid students in dealing with emotional/physical needs that must be met before learning can take place.
  1. Provide positive and successful opportunities for students to develop positive self-esteem.
  1. Provide or supervise personal care or medical care of students as stated in IEP.

 

Classroom Management and Organization:

 

  1. Create a safe and positive classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of the students.
  1. Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to IEP.
  1. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  1. Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  1. Plan and supervise activities for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s).

 

Communication:

 

  1. Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents, personnel from community agencies, and other professional staff in the education, care, and management of students.
  1. Provide on-going training, consultation, and support to school personnel.
  1. Create positive team approach to inclusive educational settings.

 

 Professional Growth and Development:

 

  1. Participate in in-district in-service training.
  1. Demonstrate interest in professional improvement.

 

Policy Implementation:

 

  1. Keep informed of, and comply with, all campus, district, state, and federal policies and regulations.
  1. Complete and maintain all reports, records, and documents.
  1. Attend and participate in faculty/staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  1. Adhere to the Professional Code of Ethics.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:   Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Coordinate programming for students in a variety of educational settings with multiple interventions. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.

 

Safety:  Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
