JOB TITLE:   Extended School Year Instructional Aide (Summer Program)

REPORTS TO: Special Education Program Supervisor

 

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assist the classroom teacher to provide for the physical and instructional needs of students.

Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction.

Work under the general supervision of the summer program supervisor and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education:

• High School Diploma or GED
• Crisis Prevention Intervention-(CPI) certification
• Para Professional Certification

 

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Ability to work well with children with disabilities
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
• Proficient communication skills

 

Minimum Experience:

• Experience working with students with significant cognitive disabilities and/or autism.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

• Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher
• Assist teachers in providing additional support for students with disabilities
• Assist teachers with keeping accurate records and data on students
• Assist students with disabilities with individual tasks as may be required including, but not limited to, transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene
• Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention
• Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom
• Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, emotional, and safety needs through in-service and/or teacher direction
• Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of individual students
• Assist in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays
• Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom
• Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of classroom equipment
• Participate in Extended School Year summer program orientation
• Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers
• Serve as an interpreter in situations when one is needed
• Any other duties as assigned by Summer Program Coordinator.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

• Specialized equipment based on student IEP and needs

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical Demands:

• Must maintain emotional control under stress.
• May be required to lift or transfer students to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities
• Possible exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases
• Frequent movement from one classroom to another
• Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
• Lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
