PRIMARY PURPOSE:       To work directly under the supervision of the Registered Nurse Director of Clinic and Health Services and the Registered Nurse on the campus assigned. To work with and provide assistance to the registered nurse and follow through with all duties and responsibilities the registered nurse assigns for the benefit of the school health program. If the clinic assistant is a licensed vocational nurse, the licensed vocational nurse has no responsibilities as the sole health program provider.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

The following list of responsibilities is not inclusive of all aspects of required job duties. The clinic assistant shall work within their scope of practice and is expected to accept direction and teaching from the supervising registered nurse.

 

  1. Works under the direct supervision of the registered nurse on assigned campus or the registered nurse Director of Clinic and Health Services.
  2. Identifies and introduces self as the Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Clinic Assistant or (Certified) Medical Assistant according to state law and wears name badge at all times while at work.
  3. Performs and/or assists with state required vision, hearing, scoliosis and also assists with height and weight measurements according to state mandated testing and IISD requirements.   Records health screening results in the electronic medical record in a timely manner.
  4. Performs or assists the registered nurse in referring students who do not pass the state required health screenings.  Keeps accurate records of referrals and outcomes of referrals. Enters all follow-up into the electronic medical record.
  5. Maintain student health records and student emergency cards on all enrolled students according to the state retention schedule.
  6. Maintain immunization records on all enrolled students.  Performs or assists the registered nurse in checking immunization records to verify compliance with current state law and maintains an immunization document in each student permanent file.
  7. Performs and/or assists the registered nurse in notifying parents of delinquent immunizations and required boosters.  Keep accurate records of delinquent/required boosters.  Follows up to assure immunizations are complete by the specific due date. Shares relevant information with licensed registered nurse.
  8. Performs basic first aid and CPR as needed. Maintains certification.
  9. Maintains and documents accurately in the electronic medical record all student visits to the clinic and calls parents to report information regarding illnesses/injuries during school hours if needed.
  10. Administers medication under the direct or indirect supervision of the registered nurse when medication fulfills district requirements and district procedures for administration of medications are followed.
  11. Follows up, collects information, and reports data regarding health status of students under the direction and supervision of the licensed registered nurse.
  12. Assists the registered nurse with implementation of the nursing plan of care commensurate with training and verified competency under the direction and supervision of the licensed nurse.
  13. Performs student-specific delegated nursing procedures and treatments including and not limited to gastrointestinal tube feedings, urinary catheterizations, and any other delegated procedure (s) after being trained or instructed to perform treatment or procedure by the registered nurse.
  14. Assists with the implementation of policies and procedures regarding the control of communicable diseases in schools.
  15. Does not offer medical opinions concerning a student's illness or injury (does not diagnose). 
  16. Maintains confidentiality in accordance with state and federal laws and district policy.
  17. Performs clerical duties and shares responsibility for the care of district inventory, proper and safe use of facilities equipment and supplies and reports safety hazards immediately to the campus RN.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned by the registered nurse or Director.
  19. Participates in staff development, Clinic and Health Services staff meetings, campus faculty meetings and special events as directed.
  20. Maintains a clean, organized, and orderly health room environment.
  21. Provides evidence of continuing education units for license or certification renewal.
  22. Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) as well as a desire to work with diverse populations, including students, parents, co-workers and supervisor(s).

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress and emergency situations Ability to assess emergency situations quickly. Administer CPR and life saving first aid if necessary until help arrives. Exhibits ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Ability to work with frequent interruptions. Ability to recognize limitations for scope of LVN practice or medical assistant duties. Flexibility to rotate to varied clinic settings. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases and bloodborne pathogens. Frequent standing, bending and stooping and walking and may be required to lift or transport students or staff to and from wheelchair or assist with positioning students with physical disabilities.

 

Safety:  Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidents immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
