Description

Primary Purpose:
Enable students to pursue their education with minimal interruption in the absence of the regularly assigned class room teacher.


Qualifications:
Education/Certification
High School Diploma or GED, required
Valid Teaching Certificate, preferred
Degree or at least 60 college semester hours, preferred
Individuals who do not hold a valid Texas Teacher Certification - completion the STEDI SubSkills training (basic option A or B) with a grade of 80% or higher

 

Special Knowledge/Skills
Demonstrated ability of written and oral communication skills
Professionalism in the classroom and with interactions of administration /staff
Completion of an Irving ISD Guest Educator Orientation
Flexibility/adaptability to changing environments

Must speak and understand conversational and proper English
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
Ability to read and comprehend written materials (lesson plans, student information, textbooks, policy and procedure)

 

Experience
Experience working with children and students, preferred


Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
1. Review with the principal or designee all lesson plans and schedules to be followed during the instructional day.
2. Teach the lesson as prepared by the absent teacher.
3. Consult as appropriate with the principal or designee, if no lesson plan is provided by the absent teacher.
Classroom Management and Organization
4. Maintain as fully as possible the established routines/schedules and procedures of the school and classroom to which the substitute is assigned.
5. Assume responsibility to oversee student behavior in the classroom and on campus as appropriate.
6. Respect district and employee property.
7. Maintain classroom(s) organization and appearance.
8. Leave a summary of work completed at the end of each instructional day for the teacher of record.
9. Follow all safety standards and procedures (lockdown, lockout, evacuate, etc.).
Communication
10. Report to the front office/ designee upon arrival to campus of assignment.
11. Maintain confidentiality of employee and student information. Only discuss student information on a need-to-know basis with campus administration.


Safety
12. Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.


Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervision of the classroom and students.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Communicate effectively both verbally, written and electronically. In a classroom setting, ability to monitor students to ensure they stay on task.

Physical Demands: While performing this job the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, move throughout the room and/or facility. Occasionally required to drive and travel to facilities within the district. In the classroom setting, may be required to position students, move and lift textbooks and other equipment.

Motions used: use hand to finger to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms, kneel, stoop or crouch and/or crawl regularly required to lift or exert force of up to 25 pounds.

Vision: Abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: Work inside and outside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces in different elements of weather.
